What is robusta coffee?

Quick answer

Coffea canephora (robusta) has more caffeine, harsher earthy flavor, and grows at lower altitudes — cheaper, common in espresso blends and instant. Rarely sold alone in specialty shops but shapes many supermarket espresso beans.

Should home brewers buy robusta?

Usually as part of a blend for espresso or moka pot — adds body and crema. Straight robusta pour over is an acquired taste.

Common questions

Why is it in espresso blends? Crema, body, and cost — balanced with arabica.
