Is decaf actually good now?

Quick answer

Yes. Modern decaf can taste balanced and sweet, especially medium roasts. It is not zero caffeine, but usually much lower than regular coffee — useful for late-day cups without wrecking sleep.

What changes when brewing decaf

Decaf can extract a bit faster, so avoid over-brewing:

  • Start around 1:15 for immersion or 1:16 for filter
  • Use slightly lower temperature if bitterness appears
  • Adjust grind before changing ratio

Common questions

Is decaf chemical-heavy? Not necessarily — many bags state Swiss Water or CO2 processing.

Can I use decaf for espresso? Yes. Dial grind as usual; expect slightly less crema.

Best time to drink decaf? Afternoon/evening when you want flavor but less stimulation.
